Bobby Mills English Oak Desk and Chair

Bobby Mills handbuilt desk and chair in English Oak. Made entirely by hand in Bobby's wood workshop in Devon. 

This one of a kind handmade desk and accompanying chair come from the same old English oak, accented with jointing details from an ancient English brown oak nearly 400 years old.

The book-matched desk top displays a high degree of natural symmetry with pippy knots throughout a flowing grain patterning. The two-piece top is secured with five hand cut butterfly keys in brown oak. The same wood is used on the drawer front and dowels on the desk under- side, as well as for the crest pins and tenons wedges on the chair. The desk top sits upon an elegant and balanced undercarriage and features supporting breather braces to allow the large pieces of wood to breath and move with seasonal changes.

The piston-fit drawer celebrates traditional hand cut joinery and features dovetail jointing and decorative slips on the interior. The finely crafted piston-fit drawer offers the perfect soft closing action, designed to physically slow during the final stages of shutting as the compressed air behind the drawer exits through a miniscule gap around the drawer front. The drawer pull was delicately turned by hand then orientated to show a tiny natural medullary halo in the grain.

The chair offers well to the desk with its elegant design and comfort, but also due to the seat being made from the same tree as the desk top. The crest has been carefully steam bent into a form that offers reassuring support to the upper back and the seat has been carved for a subtle yet fundamental element of comfort. The spindles and undercarriage have all been cut from carefully selected quartersawn English oak to ensure continuous straight grain.
